Looks pretty clean, low miles too. Not sure how much those are worth on the continent so hard for me to comment on the price.

Well, it’s no 320Ci, that’s for sure.

Joking aside, it seems like a clean car, and given the low kilometers, it was probably owned by an old person, which can be both good or bad, depending how you look at it.

The price is actually quite good. A similarly equipped Golf MkIV would cost the same. I’m jealous of UK used car prices.

That’s true but I guess a more sensible choice. But the 1.6 drinks about as much as the 320i according to forums.

After witnessing how my grandfather drove his car I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.

Yeah, way more sensible. Sometimes you need to make the sensible choice, which is how I ended up driving a Twingo.

Well, they tend to be serviced rather well, so there is that. But the driving tends to be not so kind for the car indeed.

No car is still the most sensible choice for me though. Money and everything else is no problem but my workplace is only 20 minutes away by foot:/

I would regret not at least looking at the car.

I said more sensible, not most sensible, haha.

Yeah, you should definitely look at it.

Ah in that case it’s a solid option.

Not that much exciting cars for sale right now either. I definitely don’t want a goddamn Polo, Fiesta or Corsa.

The fiesta and polo are fine, agreed on the Corsa though. Maybe a Suzuki Swift? Alfa 147 if you’re feeling brave.

Wouldn’t say no to either GTI, VXR, ST or Sport but those don’t pop up too often in my area. A former classmate had a 1.4 Polo and it was dreadful.

Decent spec 1 series? Ugly but nice to drive and the sport seats are pretty good.

Definitely on my list. The 1 is very popular with my peers it seems. Then again, finding the right one near me takes time.

I drove a facelift mk1 120d and it was actually really nice. Decently quick, gripped pretty well. The lower spec ones have pretty grim plasticky interiors though.

I had a 118d as a driver’s ed car and it was really good. Too bad my budget is too tight for low mile and well equipped 1er.

Too expensive for what you’re getting, IMHO. The Bora/Jetta is a bit of a grandpa car too, especially in silver. Probably a decent car but it’ll bore you to death. Those kms are extremely low, so low I’d become sceptical. Only short trips? 5k km a year is very little, I personally would rather get one with double (or triple) those kms. Especially if it’s a bit cheaper.

Having said all that: what are you looking for in a car? What are your priorities? Size, price, looks, driving dynamics,... ?

Kinja'd!!! FSI - alcohol enthusiast with a car problem > duurtlang

Kinja'd!!!0

Boring? Yes. But it’s got everything I’d want and I’ve always sorta liked early to mid 00s German sedans lol. Typical geezer mobile just like the Golf 55 Plus, ours is only driven 3k km a year.

My priorities are all over the place. I prefer cars with good equipment, manual, gasoline and especially painted bumpers and door handles (don’t laugh). I wouldn’t even mind a supermini as long as it’s a performance model.

tl;dr I (sorta) have no plan

Keep looking. These were the start of VAG beginning their cheap-materials/high-prices crusade, and there are better cars in the same bracket and era. Design-wise I think it looks ok, just dated. I’d take a Mazda3, Volvo S40/V50, or a Mondeo (since they’re about the same price but more room and sometimes more equipment) before a Golf/Jetta.

We have a VAG product from 2005 so I kinda know what to expect. The Bora was built in either Wolfsburg or Bratislava so I hope it won’t be as shit as the Puebla built Jetta. The C30 and S40 are high on my list but in the last couple of years there haven’t been many for sale.

Not bad at all. Too bad the E46 is in rather bad condition cosmetically. I’d probably have to invest into making it look like I want it to be. The 2.2 unit in the Opel is solid from what I read, a former classmate has an identical coupe. I’m kinda scared of high mileage older Alfas even though the description is promising. Also wouldn’t mind the Hyundai, that generation finally looked good, much better than the frog eye predecessor your brother in law ownes iirc.

I kinda missed a deal with a sub 100k km 406 coupe for under €4.000 last month.

132k km isn’t high kilometerage imho. My 406 (not a diesel) is at 307k and is long from worn. I’d actually consider 132k to be low (for the age). Any car that’s looked after can easily reach 300k. I’ve had no real issues with my 406, which I bought with 167k km. Just tires, belts, fluids and normal things like exhaust parts (once), battery and radiator (all just once in my 140k I’m of ownership).

Fully agreed about the Hyundai. The previous one, the one Thomas has, was horrible looking IMHO with a questionable interior. The newer one looks decent. No idea about the interior.

I dislike Astras, but I actually like that coupe. Should be a decent car.

All cars I linked to are close to Würzburg BTW.

Maybe a petrol one? They tend to be pretty cheap compared to the diesels here.

Not at all, I kinda prefer sub 150.000km on cars but that’s just me. As long as a car has been serviced regularly and is in good shape, sign me up. I really like the BMW but like I wrote before, it is a mess cosmetically and probably had a boy racer previous owner which worry me.

In Murka, these were the darling of oblivious coeds who got a new car from daddy, and then ran it into the ground. Later to be picked up by VW bros who would slap a “Bora” badge on it, along with replica Monoblocks. It would cost around the same here, I think, but not my kind of thing.

Compact sedans like that are unpopular in Germany and the few VW sold were bought by old people. Though stance bros like them. I kinda like it because it’s an unusual sight here.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > FSI - alcohol enthusiast with a car problem

I think I remember TG or “Car” magazine summing it up as “Golf with a boot”. As you know, Murkans love trunks, so these sold pretty well here, and our versions were all built in Mexico. These also don’t have the best reliability rep. I can’t think of a VW from that era that would be an unusual sight here, maybe a late run Eurovan or a W8 Passat/W12 Phaeton.

Back when I had a W210 E55, a stancebro lived in my building, and had a Jetta like that on Monoblock replicas. I always had a suspicion one morning I would come down to my car, and it would be on blocks, with its original Monoblocks missing. I guess I got lucky :)

The cars are just examples. You could probably find similar but better ones in your area that are more interesting than that Bora while not costing more. The Astra looked clean though.

About kms. If it’s a one or two owner car at that age (or the last owner owned it for like 8 years) it’s a big upside. If you can find out something like that it would be rather helpful.

I guess my grandma was lucky with her Mexican built Jetta which survived 9 South Dakota winters without any major repairs.

Hm, I thought stancebros loved Corvette wheels and BBS replicas. Mmmmmmmmhnggg Monoblocks..

Ah I thought you were in Germany, or are you?

I remember an old co-worker had a new 2004 Jetta TDi. Mechanically, it was awesome, but it had constant little electrical issues, and the dealer was less than awesome to work with. He got tired of the car, and in 2009 bought a Subaru, no more VW.

I’ve seen endless customized VW with various AMG wheels, the bolt patterns must be identical.

I am but also half Murican. Luckily our Golf from that era hasn’t had any problems despite being from that shitty VW malaise era.

Dunno, Monoblocks just belong on Benzes to me.

That’s some luck. I had a model year 2002 MB, which was also pretty solid - not that brand’s zenith, either.

Golfs seem to be less troublesome, perhaps. I agree about the wheels.

West coast car from new, so nothing that I know of, although the inside of one wheelarch was kind of cruddy and it scared me a bit. I know they can rust in numerous spots.

Das Wort Sedan wird fast gar nicht mehr verwendet im Deutschen sondern Stufenhecklimousine oder Limousine.

The word sedan is barely used anymore in German so they’re dubbed limousine.

Almost all mid 90s to early 00s Mercedes Benzes I see everyday have some sort of visible rust spots. And I’m not exaggerating either.

It’s rare in my area, as roads are seldom salted and the weather is mild. I have seen rusty cars from other areas though, and know well about rusty suspension issues on 202s and 210s.
